Short overview

Mount Meru is the first sight you can see when reaching Arusha town. The mountain is with its 4,566 m Tanzania’s second highest peak after Kilimanjaro and the fifth highest in Africa. Meru Summit, the highest point, and Ash Cone, an additional peak inside the crater which was formed after a more recent volcanic activity.

Day 1: Hotel to Momella gate to Miriakamba Hut

Drive from Arusha to Momella Gate takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once at the gate we will finish all the procedures and depart for the trek. The trek takes you through places from where you can catch breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the renowned Momella lakes.

Trekkers encounter wildlife like Bushbucks, Cape Buffaloes, Giraffes, and Warthogs during this day. We continue a short distance until we reach the Miriakamba hut.

Elevation: 1500m/4921ft to 2500m/8202ft

Distance: 6km/3.5mi

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Today we trek through the steep path along the ridge of the saddle. On the way, you can witness the stunning Meru crater, the ash cone, and little Meru. There are chances of us encountering wildlife like Cape Buffaloes and the black and white Colobus monkey.

We will end the trek up at Saddle hut. Once you have settled at the camp we will set off on a short trek to little Meru (3810m) for acclimatization purpose and return to Saddle hut.

Elevation: 2500m/8202ft to 3500m/11483ft

Distance: 6km

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

We wake up just after midnight and have a light meal to keep our energies high. Once done with the meal we start the final ascent to Socialist Peak. This ascent will be steep and we will be making our way through gravel and rocky cliffs. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

Once at the summit, you will enjoy the magnificent views of the Meru Crater and the Ash cone. There are chances that one might catch a glimpse of wildlife like mountain Reedbucks and Klipspringers over the rocky ridge. From the summit, we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Miriakamba hut.

Elevation: 3500m/11483ft to 4562m/14967ft down to 2500m/8202ft

Distance: 19km

Hiking Time: 10-12 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella gate

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Momella Gate, we will change the route and take the southern route down hence the change in distance trekked on this day. We will also pass through the astonishing Fig tree Arch.

Your vehicle will be waiting for you at Momella gate to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha (around 1 hour and 30 minutes).

Rongai Route

Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1950m) – Simba Camp (2600m)

Hiking Time: 3 – 4 Hours.

Distance: About 8 Km.

Habitat: Montana forest

Pick up from your hotel drive for two hours and half to Marangu park gate for formalities registration after that transfer to the Rongai trailhead in about 3hours. Meet your guide and porters before you begin your hike from the Nale Moru village.

The small winding path crosses maize fields before entering pine forest, and then climbs gently through a forest. The trail is not at all steep, but is rather a gentle hike through beautiful country. The first night’s camp is at Simba camp, at about 2,600 meters. There is a toilet and a wooden table with benches, but no hut. Water can be found just down the trail below samba camp.

Day 2: Simba Camp –Second Tarn Cave

Hiking Time: 2 – 3hours

Habitat: Moorland

Late Breakfast, enjoy the morning at Simba camp proceed with the hiking very slowly acclimatize your body until you reach Second cave (3450m) for hot lunch. Afternoon relax at second cave with dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Second Tarn Cave (2600m) – Kikelewa Cave (3600m)

Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours.

Habitat: Moorlands.

After breakfast then continues up towards Kibo, reaching Kikelwa Cave at about 3600 meters. The views start to open up and you begin to feel you’re on a really big mountain! Water is in the obvious stream below the cave, although you might have to wander downhill a way to find some. Overnight at 3rd Cave camp (Kikelewa Caves).

Day 4: Kikelewa Cave (3600) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m)

Hiking time: 3 – 4 hours.

Habitat: Moorlands.

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views of this wilderness area. The vegetation zone ends shortly before you reach your next camp at Mawenzi Tarn spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m) – Kibo Hut (4700m)

Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours.

Habitat: Alpine desert.

Continue ascending on the east side of Kibo crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo taking 4 to 5 hours to reach Kibo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo Camp.

Day 6: Summit Attempt, Kibo Hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3720m)

Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru, 6 hours to descend to Horombo.

Distance: 6 km’s ascent – 21 km’s descent.

Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit.

You will wake up around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. This is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim.

This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort. Probably the most demanding section of the entire route. From Gillman’s Point you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Total exhilaration and satisfaction – you made it. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you can spend, taking photographs, before the 3-hour descent back to Kibo hut for a short rest ten after your descent to Horombo hut (3 hours) where you will overnight.

The descent to Horombo hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around almost 14 hours. Later in the evening you enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and well-earned sleep.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3720m) – Marangu Gate (1980m)

Hiking Time: 6 hours.

Distance: About 27 Km.

After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman’s Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. You now drive back to Arusha or Moshi where your trekking tour ends with sweet memories.

Day 3: Shira One – Shira Two (3-4hrs, 3840m)

After breakfast we will depart from Shira one to Shira Two camp for hot lunch. In the evening we will hike to Shira Cathedral (3940m) to acclimatize.

Day 4: Shira Two – Lava Tower Camp (3-4hrs, 4600m)

Leave Shira Two to Lava Tower Camp (4600m) for hot lunch. In the evening hike to the Tower for magnificent view of the Great Barranco Valley.

Day 5: Lava Tower – Moir Hut – Pofu Camp (5-6hrs, 4450m)

After breakfast we will leave for Pofu camp via Moir Huts for hot Lunch.

Day 6: Pofu – School Hut (4-5hrs, 4700m)

We leave for School hut for hot lunch, in the evening we will hike to William point (5000m) to acclimatize.

Day 7: School Hut – Summit – Horombo Huts/Mweka Camp

Midnight wake up for a light breakfast before climbing to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro via Stella point(5685m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise we are ever likely to see on Earth (weather permitting).

From Stella point is about 1hr to Uhuru peak – the highest point (5895m) on Kilimanjaro and the highest free-standing mountain on the planet. After taking your memorable pictures you will descend to Barafu camp for a short break and lunch before having another descent to Mweka camp/Horombo Huts (3100,3700m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Horombo/Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate

Today we complete our Kilimanjaro climb.

We are met at the base of Kilimanjaro, awarded with certificate before driving to your hotel for dinner party and overnight.

Machame Route

Day 1:  Machame Gate – Machame Camp (1800m – 3100m, 4-5 hrs)

After breakfast we leave for Machame gate. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down can be muddy and slippery and Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach Machame camp where we will spend our first night.

Day 2:  Machame Camp – Shira Camp (4-5hrs, 3800m)

After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley, walking along a steep rocky ridge covered with Heather vegetation until the ridge ends.

Dinner and overnight will be at Shira camp.

Day 3:  Shira Plateau – Barranco Valley Camp (4-5hrs, 3950m)

From the Shira plateau we continue to the East up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower. Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to Arrow Glacier for acclimatization.

Later we will descend to Barranco campsite for dinner and overnight.

Day 4:  Barranco – Barafu Camp (4-5hrs, 4600m)

After breakfast we scramble the Great Barranco wall to Barafu camp. In the evening we will hike to Cossovo point (4800m) to acclimatize.

Day 5:  Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Barafu – Mweka Camp

Midnight wake up for a light breakfast before climbing to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro via Stella point(5685m), we will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise we are ever likely to see on Earth (weather permitting).

From Stella point is about 1hr to Uhuru peak – the highest point (5895m) on Kilimanjaro and the highest free-standing mountain on the planet. Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Huts (3-4hrs, 1800m – 2700m)

After breakfast we will drive to Marangu gate (1800m) above sea level for a – 3-4hrs walk to Mandara huts (2700m). In the evening we will hike to Maundi crater (3000m) to acclimatize.

Dinner and overnight at Mandara huts.

Day 2:  Mandara – Horombo (4- 6hrs, 2700m – 3720m)

After breakfast ascend to Horombo huts, picnic lunch box/arrival at Horombo huts for hot lunch. In the evening we will hike to Mawenzi Turn Hut (3200m) to acclimatize.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.

Day 3: Horombo – Saddle – Horombo

Free day to acclimatize at Horombo Huts.

On this day we will hike for 3hrs to Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. We will reach 4300m via Zebra Rocks. Return to Horombo Huts for hot lunch and use the rest of the day at leisure.

Dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.

Day4:  Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts (4-5hrs, 3700m – 4720m)

Afterbreakfast ascend to Kibo Huts. Picnic lunch on the way. In the evening we will hike to School Hut or Williams Point (5200m) to acclimatize.

Dinner and overnight at KiboHuts.

Day 5:  Kibo Huts – Uhuru Peak – Kibo Huts – Horombo Huts

This is the longest and probably the hardest day!

We will wake up around 12am for a cup of coffee/tea before tackling the highest point of Kilimanjaro (Kibo- alternatively known as Uhuru peak -5895m). A start in the early hours of the morning is necessary in order to reach the summit by sunrise which is the best phenomenon to witness on Earth.

The final assault is aimed at Gilmans point on the crater rim 5681m. This usually takes 5-6hrs. Time, and energy permitting, there is an option of climbing the higher Uhuru peak Kibo – Uhuru point 5895m. Whilst this is only 600m from Gilman point it takes 1-2hrs. After taking in the view and a rest, we descend down to the Kibo Huts.

After a break and lunch, we will descend down to Horombo Huts for dinner and overnight.

Day6:  Horombo Huts – Mandara Huts – Marangu Gate (4-5hrs, 18km)

Today we complete our Kilimanjaro climb.

We are met at the base of Kilimanjaro, awarded with certificate before driving to your hotel for dinner party and overnight.

Day 1: Arrival In Zanzibar – Nungwi

Arrive at Zanzibar airport where you will be met by our driver and be taken to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Dolphin Tour and Mnemba Island Snorkeling

We will depart from the hotel in Nungwi/Matemwe at 0900am for Swimming with Dolphins followed by snorkeling at Mnemba Island. Beach relaxation in the evening witnessing Sunset.

Day 6: Kuza Caves

After Break leave Paje for Jambiani to visit this historical site in Zanzibar (optional and not included in the price).

Day 7: Covid Test – Blue Safari – Stone Town

We will leave Paje at 0730am for your COVID test at Lumumba Hospital in Stone town followed by Blue safari tour till 5pm.

We leave stone town at 0900am to Fumba village where our sailing boat will be awaiting to take us to Kwale Island for BLUE WATER SAFARI – The highlight of Zanzibar.

We will sail in a beautiful traditional wooden dhow, watch Dolphins (if we have a chance of seeing them) at play, snorkel over the reefs of Menai Bay conservation area, feast on a swahili influenced seafood buffet that include Fish on coconut source, Rice, French Fries, Calamari, Lobster, Prawns, tropical fruits etc. We will visit a Baobab tree believed to be more than 500years old before sailing back to Fumba village and drive to Stone Town for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Jozani Forest & Spice Farm Tour

After the City tour around( 0900AM) we will drive to Spice farm (20-30mins) to experience the rare tropical fruits, spices and other rare species of plants that grow in Zanzibar. You will have a chance to eat, smell and taste different fruits and spices to learn why Zanzibar is called a spice Island.

You can have lunch in the farm prepared by local women group there.

In the afternoon we will have a chance to walk in the only Zanzibar tropical forest to see the rare species of Monkeys (Red Colobus Monkey) the specie found nowhere else in the world but only in Zanzibar.

Day 9: Prison Island & Nakupenda Sandbank

At 0900am you will be taken from your hotel for a full day at Prison Island and Nakupenda (I love you) Sandbank. Prison Island was formerly owned by an Arab and was privately used as a place of detention for disobedient slaves. It was built in 1893 as a central prison for Zanzibar, hence the name “PRISON ISLAND”. You will be able to see Giant Tortoises, Dik dik, Peacock, Prison Chamber, Mangrove forest and perhaps swim and snorkel if interested. In the early afternoon you will move to Nakupenda Island and sandbank (30 minutes) by boat.

This is the ideal place near stone town where you can relax, swim, and snorkel while enjoying your BBQ of seafood, soft and hard drinks, tropical fruits under the shade of built umbrellas. Lunch will be ready at 1pm. In the evening you will be brought at the shores for an hour break before joining a sunset cruise at 5-7pm (optional).

Dinner and overnight in stone town.

Day 10: Stone Town Tour – Dar Es Salaam

After breakfast (0900am), we will have a chance to visit Town Markets, old slave markets, National Museum, High court building, Old German Consulate, Africa House (former English Club), Tippu Tip House and Grave, Kele kele square, Old British Consulate, Orphanage home, Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, House of Wonders, Sultan Palace, Dr. Livingstone House, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Old Mosques, Freddie Mercury House among others.

At your own planned time drive to Zanzibar airport or a ferry to Dar Es Salaam.
